From July 29- August 15, 2013 the Shasta College's Vocal Institute prepares students for the next step in a music career: auditioning, rehearsing, and performing in the fields of voice, opera, musical theatre, and acting.
For eleven years the Vocal Institute has been a north state resource for young singers that are interested in an intensive training program. The 2013 Shasta Vocal Institute is an intesntive three-week course in applied voice and acting that provides a unique opportunity for high school and college-age singers to prepare for advanced studies. It is open to students, age 14 and older, who are able to meet the physical and musical demands of art song, opera and musical theatre repertoire in an intensified artistic atmosphere. The daily schedule includes vocal instruction, repertoire coaching, acting classes, and staging of scenes from operas and musicals. Participants are introduced to both beginning and advanced concepts of technique and interpretation in art song, opera, and musical theatre repertoire. The Institute in art song, opera, and musical theatre repertoire. The Institute is a full day activity from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
This year, Summer 2013, You can learn new repertoire including art songs, opera duets and trios, and scenes from musical theater. We will be learning parts of the "Magic Flute" by Mozart. For the first time in many years we will be singing some Wagner, "The Flying Dutchman". From the modern repertoire, we have French composer Francois Poulenc's "Dialogues of the Carmelites" Scenes from the Meredith Willson show "The Music Man" finish the evening. Our opera chorus this year will be The Anvil Chorus from Il Trovatore by Verdi.
The final shows for the Vocal Institute 2013 will be on Friday night, August 9th (the Art Song concert) and Thursday night, August 15th (the Final Performance).
Former and returning members have gone on to win awards and attend major music schools, such as AVA, Oberlin, CCM, San Francisco State, NYU, University of Southern California, Thornton School of music, and the New England Conservatory.
